Maya Art, History, and Culture

Mesoamerica encompasses the bottom two-thirds of Mexico, all of Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, and parts of Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. The concept of Mesoamerica started with archaeologist Paul Kirchhoff. He discovered that there were a set of characteristics that differentiated Mesoamerica from its neighbors. These include: agriculture based on maize, beans, and squash, hieroglyphic or pictographic writing, astronomical knowledge, a 260 day ritual calender, human sacrifice and bloodletting, urbanism, and monumental buildings built on stepped platforms.
