The Mayan people eat mostly corn, tortillas, beans, squash, and meat on special occasions. Vegetables are grown on terraced hillsides in irrigated plots called tablones. Wheat and other grains are also grown. Mayans produce most of what they eat. Anything extra is sold for cash. The man of the family does most of the work in the field. Sometimes the fields may be on the side of a mountain or volcano. Planting may be accompanied by a ceremony conducted by a native prayer man.
